What The Hell Would You Even Do In God of War 4?

So during the night the Playstation facebook page added a photo with a simple message “Will Vengeance Bring Redemption? 04.19.12″. Now given the color and style of the image it screams God of War. So of course the fans have gone super bat crazy over a possible God of War 4 announcement. However I can’t help but think..

What the hell would you even do in God of War 4? Better yet, do we even need one?

* WARNING MASSIVE SPOILERS  ABOUT THE WHOLE SERIES AHEAD*

Now don’t get me wrong, I love the God of War series. Well more correctly I love the story (I’ve found the combat to be way to plain for my DMC shaped taste) and well the story has come to a close. And even besides that….

EVERYONE IS DEAD!

Over the course of 3 Playstation games and 2 Psp ones, Kratos has killed damn near everyone in Greek mythology. Lets simmer on that for a second. The main character has killed nearly EVERYONE of note in an ancient mythology. Lets just go over the list.

  1. Hydra
  2. Medusa
  3. Ares
  4. Theseus
  5. Perseus
  6. Icarus
  7. Jason and the Argonauts
  8. Euryale
  9. Kraken
  10. Lahkesis
  11. Atropos
  12. Clotho
  13. Athena
  14. Basilisk
  15. Scylla
  16. Callisto
  17. Erinys
  18. Piraeus Lion
  19. Laneaus
  20. King Midas
  21. Thanatos
  22. Deimos
  23. Charon
  24. Persephone
  25. Hippocampi
  26. Daedalus
  27. Helios
  28. Poseidon
  29. Hades
  30. Hermes
  31. Hercules
  32. Hephaestus
  33. Cronos
  34. Hades Cerberus
  35. The Three Judges
  36. Pandora
  37. Zeus

And that’s just a list of the ones that Kratos actually killed. There are other’s that are mentioned being dead off-screen.  Soooo that leaves all the minor guys and the ones whose fate was never mentioned (Morpheus, Atlas, etc).

Now with the God of War mythos being so entrenched in Greek mythology I don’t feel like creating an original setting will feel as good. So unless Kratos is going to enter the world of Valhalla and start up Ragnarok (which btw would make an AWESOME series by the way, Ragnarok Chronicles: Every-God-Fight- To-The-Death-In-An-Epic-Scripted-Battle-That-Was-Warned-In-A-Legend-But-No-One-Could-Stop for Playstation 4,  MSRP 69.99 with Day One DLC on Disc (See What I Did There?)) I can’t help but wonder if they did do a God of War 4 where would they take it???

While redemption would be an interesting theme for most games, in God Of War however, what the hell is there to redeem? The whole point was revenge, and through the bloody course of 5 games Kratos has Charles Bronson’d the whole of Olympus. If Kratos can’t be satisfied with that then it invalidates the whole series.

My point in all this is that God of War had a great trilogy with two good sidestories. The natural story ended and feels complete. Let the game go out on a high point rather than franchise it to death. Some things don’t need sequels. So unless they have an amazing storyline that fits and makes sense in a post-apocalyptic Greece, let the series go in peace.

Just to drive the point home I’m just going to leave you with this:

  • Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
  • Alien Resurrection
  • Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull
  • Terminator Salvation

Need I say more?
